Waking up isn't always easy. An alarm clock certainly gets the job done, but not always in the most useful or pleasant way.

With the variety of free online alarm clocks now available, there's an alarm clock for almost everyone. As long as you have a computer or a mobile device and an internet connection, you can start using any online alarm clock right away.

Here are a few situations where an online alarm clock might come in handy (even if you already have access to a traditional alarm clock by your bedside table or a built-in alarm clock app on your mobile device):

  • When you're traveling. Chances are you're not going to bring your big, bulky bedside alarm clock on the road with you. Since you'll probably bring your computer or mobile device with you anyway, having it double as an alarm clock is pretty darn convenient.
  • When you need a backup alarm. It stinks when your alarm doesn't go off for whatever reason (or you've just become so accustom to hitting snooze that it hardly phases you anymore). Sometimes having a backup alarm is worth it.
  • When you want customizable features. Whether you're looking to replace the horrid buzzing noise of your traditional alarm clock with pleasant sounds of nature, or expecting a weather report for the current day as soon as you open your eyes, there are online alarm clocks out there that offer all sorts of amazingly innovative and customizable features to improve your wake-up experience.

Keep in mind that if you try any of the following web-based alarm clocks in a web browser, you'll need to make sure that your computer or device stays on. That means disabling sleep mode, plugging your laptop or device charger in so the battery doesn't run out and hoping there's no power outage before you need your alarm to go off—otherwise you'll be out of luck!

For a super simple, ad-free and pleasantly personalized wake-up experience right from the desktop, Onlive Clock is our number once choice. The screen shows a digital clock in large numbers over a calm nature scene, which you can change to anything you want by accessing the settings.

Use the dropdown options beneath the time to set your alarm and click the gear icon in the menu at the bottom of the screen to configure your general settings, choose the type of clock you want and the color of the numbers, select or upload a background image and set an alarm sound. You can choose from one of the four built-in sounds, one of the built-in radio stations or a YouTube video of your choice.

As an added bonus, you can click the frame button in the lower right corner to conveniently enter full screen mode. It also looks gorgeous in a mobile web browser. The only major drawbacks are that you can't set multiple alarms and there's no snooze button.

TimeMe

A close tie for first, TimeMe is our second choice for keeping things simple yet integrating several useful features into its alarm clock that can't be found on some of the others on this list. It's one of the few that allows you to set multiple alarms—up to 25 that can be color coded and set on a cycle.

The clock is shown in large, blue numbers over a white background with a range of settings you can customize beneath it. You can adjust the clock back or forward to check other time zones, give your clock a title, change the color/size/font of the numbers and more. To set up multiple alarms, just click the Alarms link beneath the clock.

Another great feature TimeMe offers is the ability to save your clock settings and grab a link to it so you can easily access it later, with everything already set up. The only real feature this alarm clock lacks is the ability to customize the background beyond black or white.

MetaClock

MetaClock is a social alarm clock that goes beyond offering the most basic features, making it really stand out among some of the others on this list. In addition to giving you the ability to set multiple alarms, you can also use it to create a to-do list for the next day, see the local weather forecast, connect with Facebook friends who use MetaClock to wake up and tell everyone how you feel when you wake up with your alarm.

Just click inside the numbers of time displayed in the middle of the screen to customize your wake-up time. You can also choose one of the default tunes, a YouTube link or an audio file of your own to set as your alarm sound. A handy snooze button is available for your convenience plus a number of settings you can customize by clicking the orange Alarm Settings button.

Since MetaClock is social, you'll need to have a Facebook account to sign in and start using it. If you're not on Facebook, you'll have to choose a different alarm clock from this list.

OnlineClock.net

Fourth on our list is OnlineClock.net—another online alarm clock that we love because its simple design and feature offering look and function great on both the desktop and mobile web. A digital clock tells the time right down to the second with a couple dropdown menu options beneath it for setting your alarm.

You'll also see several links beneath the time that take you to different clock versions and customizable settings. Select from various sounds for your alarm, set a timer, start a countdown or choose a background. You can also use the links at the top of the screen to customize the size of the clock and background color.

OnlineClock.net has a lot of great options if you're just looking for something basic, however its navigation and settings certainly can be a little confusing with all the new browser tabs opening any time you click something. You also can't set multiple alarms or hit a snooze button, so if those features are important to you, you might need to look elsewhere.

Online Alarm Kur
OnlineAlarmKur.com

Online Alarm Kur is a simple, no nonsense alarm clock that tells you the time in digital format over a black background along with the date and alarm settings below it. Just set the time you want the alarm to go off at the time you want, customize the sound of your alarm by choosing from 11 different sounds and set the snooze duration for the snooze button. A countdown will automatically pop up beneath the current time.

Although it works perfectly fine, its not exactly the most visually appealing due to the large ads that cover up nearly half the screen—nor does it have very many features to customize beyond the most basic alarm settings. And like Onlive Clock and OnlineClock.net, you can only set one alarm at a time.

Sleep Cycle
Screenshot of Sleep Cycle for iOS

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock is actually a free mobile app for iOS and Android that doesn't have a regular web version. What sets this one apart from the rest is that it analyzes your sleep by tracking the sounds from your movement through your mobile device's microphone or accelerometer and then selects an appropriate time to wake you up during the the light sleep phase of a typical 90-minute sleep cycle.

All you need to do is set your alarm and the app will use a 30 minute window around that time to find your lightest sleep state so it can wake you up gently. An intelligent snooze feature gives you the option to snooze through your wake-up window, becoming shorter in duration as you're slowly woken up fully to your desired alarm time. To snooze, just double-tap on your device.

There's nothing really web-based about this particular alarm clock except for the fact that you need to have internet access to download it. For those who find waking up to be excruciatingly painful, this alarm clock app is probably a good choice.
