How to Remove Scareware on a Mac

  1. Open Activity Monitor. You can find it in Applications > Utilities.
  2. Locate and select the process that belongs to the scareware. Use the search bar at the top right of Activity Monitor if you know the name of the process, otherwise browse through the list manually until you find it.
  3. Once chosen, use the "X" icon at the top left corner of Activity Monitor to force it to shut down.
  4. When asked if you're sure, choose Quit.
  5. Remove the login startup process (if there is one for this program) to ensure that any lingering files will not try to open the next time you log in.
  6. Open Finder and search for the scareware folder you want to remove. This is the folder that holds the scareware files.
  7. Drag the folder and its files directly into the Trash folder. Feel free to empty the Trash, too.
  8. Safari users should disable the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" feature. This will ensure that even file types considered safe will not open automatically.
